Montcalm and Bougainville each thought very highly of the other, and the two remained close friends until the death of the Marquis. By the end of the war, Bougainville was a colonel, and he shortly transferred to the navy. In 1766 he led a scientific expedition around the world and explored the South Pacific. He published a book of his travels in 1771. The story of his discovery of Tahiti and his descriptions of that region excited considerable public interest. It was he who introduced the Bougainvillea flower to Europe.
